Imperial Guard - Charybdis Assault Launchers (proxy Griffon/Hydra)

Pressing onward with the guard vehicles for the glorious 7th brings us to the Charybdis Assault Launchers, which I've used alternately as proxy Griffons or Hydras as the situation calls for. Made from the older Chimeras, some bits from the vehicle upgrade sprue and the launcher and top hatch from a space marine Whirlwind, they fit together surprisingly easily!

I continued on with the "mid-launch sequence" on one of the launchers, I like the dynamic look it gives the model, though it'll invariably come loose or snap off in due course...

On the rear section I added a hatch, and have plans to be able to run these as Salamander scout tanks with the enclosed crew compartment upgrade, though I'll need to build a set of autocannon or heavy flamer turrets to take the place of the launcher. Should be fairly easy to do, and make them even more multi-purpose!

  1. Just love these guys, the yellow just jumps out at you and gives it such a distinctive look.

  2. While I don't envy you trying to keep that flying missile attached, it does look good, especially with the second only half out of the tube.

  4. Perhaps some magnets could sort out your worries regarding the cool firing missile?

Very nice looking tanks mate. Modular ideas are very practical, far too practical for the likes of me to attempt. :)

  5. They look very good indeed! You could even use them as the new AA Manticore from Aeronautica.

  7. Thanks very much folks!

@Andy - bG: I'm pretty pleased with the 'yellow weapons' thing, it's definitely helping tie all the various units together. I still need to go back and update a couple vehicles, but that's a simple fix!

@Da Masta Cheef: Indeed, I'm going to have to be very cautious with it...

@Malkavschilde: It's a rather easy conversion - the top hatch/plate form a rhino is just the right width to fit between the track sections on a Chimera. It's like it's meant to be!

@Dai: Good call - next go-round I'm definitely going to be giving them the magnet treatment. Multi-function is the name of the game with these tanks. They definitely give me a wide array of options when it comes to building army lists!

@Sir Tainly: Ooh - I didn't know there was such a thing! I haven't picked up that IA book yet, but with the release of the 6th ed. update to volume 1 I'm going to have to place an order soon. The Aeronautica book will soon be mine!

    Cheers, all!

  8. Brilliant!

Simple and very effective - you know that's how I like conversions!

I love what you've done with the rears - was that tricky?

  9. Cool - really like how they turned out, must be a man of steel sticking his head out that hatch :)

I'm a really big fan of multipurpose - brilliant job getting so many vehicles into the same one.

  11. I appreciate the kind words, everyone!

@Admiral Drax: It was fairly straightforward - the rear angled bit is just the lower hull extension flipped up and laid along the rim on the inside of the track section. A piece of track guard had the ends trimmed slightly to cover the gap on the underside. It's a little dodgy if you look at it from the bottom, but when upright on the tabletop, it looks about right. :)

@Manus: Hah! Here's hoping he's got some serious ear protection (and sunscreen)!

@Impcommander: I definitely enjoy adding little effects like this to the occasional model. It makes the games look a bit more cinematic!

  12. I like the look of these a lot (I did the same thing). I'm pretty sure you could count these as pretty much anything short of a basilisk (which has visual recognition) and no one would bat an eyelash.

  13. Love the colour scheme, simple, clean but bold as well. To see it work with both Armour and Air is testament to its effectiveness.

Cinematic! Dan Abnett would be proud, cracking job. :)

  14. Thanks very much, folks!

@TheAmbit: Indeed! I've been rooting around in the bits boxes for further turret options!

    @Bix: I appreciate it!
